I installed the latest version, but many of the apps that I try would not work for me.
Chrome would shut down immediately, Firefox claims that it's the wrong version/armeabi-v7a 22, Powerpoint says that it does not support my CPU.

Longer version:
My old official stock ROM A501 started giving errors whenever trying to install or update apps (unlike today) and the play store was outdated.
A few months ago I tried fixing it by upgrading to a new OmniROM. It was not easy – I had to downgrade first and use several guides from here. I ended up with the then latest version V12, but it did not cure that issue.
After installing the bootloader that was recommended for reformatting the partitions to fsf and doing so, the old problem was fixed but now I have the new issue, that some apps would not run. I tried updating to V13; installing different gapps – currently the ARM 5.1 pico from open gapps (I picked myself both 20170523&20170604, because the link above did not work); and several wipes and reformats of cache and data partitions. It did not help. I am lost. :(

What am I doing wrong? Is it about the gapps/play store? Any working version for my device?
Btw, can I install a new version of gapps without wiping everything?

Thank you in advance for any help!

I also understood reading here that It may be the Google Play Services. I figured I need the 230 variant from apkmirror, am I right? The latest version, 11.0.55, has this variant, but it works as I wrote above, Is it normal or should I expect more? I tried downloading 10.0.84, but it won't install from android – how should I get it installed? Without gapps? Any way of doing that without keep resetting the device every time?
Thanks!

I have no SIM issues with my A501, running the same ROM and boot loader.
Im using a Telstra ( in Australia ) SIM with an adapter.

I am however having alot of issues with Google apps (like Chrome and Maps), just like the guys above have described.

Surprise  50 Mbps/30 Mbps...

I had exactly the same frustration as you !!!!!!!!!!

That WIFI ALTERNATIVE FIRMWARE really should be removed from this ROM !!!!!

HDMI seems to work OK for me on this ROM, and Ive got a A501.
And no, theres no setting for HDMI.

I would guess its your cable/adapter.

Has anyone experienced a loss of audio? If my A500 charge runs down all the way and in other situations as well I cant get any audio, not from the speaker or USB audio. I can get it sometimes to play out of the jack sometimes though. If the speaker audio works then most the time the USB audio will. This happens while trying streaming audio if that makes any difference.

After messing around with this for a while i figured out that if I do a backup I can get it working again, most times anyway, not all the time. Does this make any sense to anyone?
I have two of these tablets and both of them have this issue. both are on v13 now though Ive had this before with other versions.
I'm not sure why backing it up makes it work again because just rebooting won't.

Is there a setting I have wrong or an I/O issue or ? Any input is appreciated!

Thanks and thanks again to Thor and Digetx for all their continued hard work!

I've been getting more and more frequent Google Play Services stopped messages but it's just annoying, not unusable. Has anyone updated to another version that is safe?

I recently decided to wipe and put the ROM back on for a fresh install. Instead of using the gapps provided, I used the 'pico' open gapps package at opengapps.org - which since then, I have been getting less of those 'google play services stopped' messages. A message still pops up every minute or few, but for me, it's more usable now than what it was when i last used the tablet months ago.

EDIT:
I just now decided to use adb logcat to find out what exactly is causing this message to show.
I saw the com.google.android.gms.droidguard* service crashing.
So I installed DisableService from google play (requires root), opened it, went to the system tab, then google play services, searched for 'guard' and disabled "DroidGuardService" which is also "com.google.android.gms.droidguard.DroidGuardService". Its been about 30 minutes, and even with a reboot, I have not had the message pop up since. Google play still rarely crashes, but the annoying reoccurring message is now gone for me.

That's a great tip. I have 10.5.42 installed on mine. What's your gapps version?
