Recovery for the Acer A500/A501

outdated 1.7.3 rec only | How to REALLY format /data

Postby thor2002ro » 13 Nov 2011, 15:02

if your data partition gets corrupted you need a REAL format.... or you need to bypass "Skipping erase of /data/media"

here's how to:
go to in recovery enter "Backup and Restore" and click on "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media)"
should say enabled....
then go into "Mounts and Storage" and "format /data"

this will REALLY format data and you will loose all you have in the in the internal memory

Re: How to REALLY format data partition if it gets corrupted

Postby xtremeviper02 » 06 Dec 2011, 19:36

I never usually post on forums to much so here it goes. Last week I had my tablet on my desk at work playing iheartradio. I turned the app off and clicked the power button to turn the screen off before leaving to go home. WHen I arrive I open my bag, grab the Acer a500 out and see the boot screen just constantly doing its little thing. The screen was very hot. I backed up the ROM. Then wiped data the normal way...cleared dalvik cache as well and then tried to restore the original 14.1 rom but just stayed at bootup annimation.

Then I tried your method above...I did not see any toggle under Backup and Restore... Custom CWM is 1.5 from August.... I then tried to format data from the mounts selection and keep getting error cannot format data/app/rovio.......angrybirds.apk something like that... Need help!! Please and Thank you!

The last option after you choose 'Backup and Restore' (CWM v5.0.2.3(thor2002ro rev1.5))

Another option if you get an error when formatting as described above is to start your tablet with the screen lock switched to lock, hold Vol Up + Power and as soon as the tablet vibrates start switching the screen lock back and forth this will cause it to format the data partition and this ALWAYS works for me.

Hello,

Please I need your help.
I followed the procedure above "go to in recovery enter "Backup and Restore" and click on "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media)"
The big problem is I go into the Backup and Restore" I get only these options:
- Full Backup
- Full Restore
- Advanced Backup
- Advanced Restore
- +++++Go Back+++++
and that is all.
I tried also to find the place where the (/data/media) is but could not find any thing.
My ROM is Thor ver.14
The clockworkmod ver is 5.0.0.0
In the main menu, I get, among others, "Mounts and Storage" where in there the "format/data". But here non of its content can be applied.
So, I really appreciate your help

The reboots and freezes become so annoying that I decided to reformat the data/media partition (taggle backup of data/media in recovery) reflashed the ROM did even once more hard reset after reinstalling AND everything is o.k. again :-)
No reboots or freezes so far :-)

I'm also experiencing problems mounting anything and need to format the data. I'm using the power, vol+ and rotate lock method but it boots straight into the Scrilax bootloader V8 screen every time. Thoughts?

Re: How to REALLY format data partition if it gets corrupted

Postby ciul90 » 11 Dec 2012, 17:10

I have tried to follow the steps from first post, but it does not work me. It gives
Code: Select all
Backup and Restore /data/media: Enabled
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
Formatting /data...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p8
Error formating /data!

Any ideas how to get over this problem?
