Latest leak of ICS: 1.031.00
Link: http://adf.ly/6NhU2

Info
ICS Root is a tool to root Ice Cream Sandwich on Acer Tablets. It works on all official ICS builds and is ridiculously easy to use. It is extendible via third party bundles too and is now less than 5mb in size and the zipped up download is just 1.9mb!!

Feature list
*Roots, installs Superuser SuperSU, su, busybox and my A500 Root Tools app specific to the Acer ICS which allows you to remount /system rw without a patched kernel as well as get your UID on the ICS Bootloader
*Can remove AcerNidus
*Can remove the auto-reflash of the stock recovery so you can install CWM in APX mode and not have it immediately overwritten
*Works with all A500 leaks as well as the OTA Releases on both the A50x and A51x!
*sysrw / sysro installation
*Bundle Market functionality like the APX Flash Tool but for automatic installation of files whilst rooting
*Completely rewritten from scratch in version 7 for reliability and functionality
*Patched mount command installer so you can remount /system natively (similar to ZeroNull's script on XDA but rewritten from scratch)

Hope you find this useful :) Let me know how it goes! It has been tested extensively on my A500 but I can't guarantee it'll be so perfect for you so I welcome all bug reports. Also, I take no responsibility for your equipment, although if something goes wrong I'd be more than happy to try and assist you!

PLEASE NOTE
Windows Defender (Windows 8) / Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows 7), and possibly other anti-virus applications, will detect the exploit as malware and quarantine / block it. There is no malware in this application! Please disable your anti-virus before trying to use ICS Root or the application may not work.

I made a YouTube video demoing it. Sorry about the long-windedness :P

(yes the app does look different in that video. That video shows version 2 of ICS Root. We are now on version 7 :P)

Instructions
Windows
0) Install ICS on your tablet
1) Enable USB Debugging on your tablet (Settings | Development | Enable USB Debugging)
2) Plug your tablet into the computer using the USB cable
3) Load up ICS Root, choose your options and press "DO IT!"
4) Once rebooted, enjoy!!

Linux
0) Install ICS on your tablet
1) Enable USB Debugging on your tablet (Settings | Development | Enable USB Debugging)
2) Plug your tablet into the computer using the USB cable
3) Ensure you have extracted the Linux ICS Root zip file
4) Load up a terminal windows and cd to the directory containing ICS Root
5) Run chmod +x ./root.sh to make the script executable
6) Run ./root.sh -d to debug the connection. Ensure ADB detects your device
7) Run ./root.sh -h to choose what options you want
8) Run ./root.sh <your options here> to process your tablet
9) Once the tablet reboots, you're all set! Enjoy!

System Requirements
Windows
* Windows XP / Vista / 7
* .Net framework 4
* Acer Iconia USB / ADB Driver from Acer

Linux
* Any good Linux distribution
* You MAY require, depending on your distribution and selection of packages installed, a udev rule. This is outside the scope of this post. Otherwise installing the android sdk may fix this

Both
* An Acer Iconia Tab A500 / A501 / G100W / A200 (probably) on stock Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 from Acer (either leaked or OTA)
* The tablet USB cable

Changelog:
Windows Version 7.2.0
*Updated Superuser to SuperSU by Chainfire, as it is a better rooting tool
*Updated some links to use the new acerhacks.com domain name
*Again, ClickOnce adopters will receive this update as soon as ICS Root is begins loading
Windows Version 7.1.1
*Updated the Superuser APK and su binary
*If you're already rooted you can just update from Google Play for the APK and Superuser app for the su binary. Fresh rooters will receive the updated files
*Those of you who installed via ClickOnce should receive the update as soon as ICS Root starts loading
Windows Version 7.1
*Added patched mount command installation
*Fixed some issues with the root tools app (a necessary script wasn't installed before - my fault! All working now)
*Stopped the UI lagging every few seconds (I moved the USB Device scanning to a BackgroundWorker and it's flawless now)
*Added a ClickOnce-based loader
Windows Version 7
*Rewrote all the code from scratch! It is now a completely new application coded from scratch
*The app will tell you if your tablet has debugging enabled or not
*Remounter app is gone - it's now called "A500 Root Tools" and allows you to do the remounting as before but also can enter APX Mode automatically(!!!!) as well as get your UID and bootloader version. It can also reboot you into recovery mode
*Bundle extensibility - all third party apps are now downloadable in-app!
*LESS THAN 5MB EXTRACTED! The zipped up download is 1.8MB which is about a 20th (no joke!) of version 6
*Removed FaceLock, AcerRing etc. - all this stuff will be migrated to bundles
*Much cleaner remounting whilst rooting - should make third party bundle installing very reliable
*Broken the process up now. Might take longer but it's much more reliable
*Included update checker
*Exponentially better code. I'm very proud of it!
*Users can browse for a bundle themselves
*Completely new UI which is less crowded but more functional. Everything is still on one Form :)
Windows Version 6.0
*Updated UI
*Added sysrw / sysro
*Fixed remounting to not affect other partitions mounted in subfolders of /system (such as the flexrom)
*Fixed bash permissions
*Updated the AcerRing installer to actually install the APK
*No longer need to choose leak version and newer versions won't appear older when the AcerRing is installed
*Added option to not reboot after install
*Updated auto-reflash to be more likely to work on the A501
*Set it so you can only install one of FaceLock and AcerRing - only one can work!
Windows Version 5.1 / Linux Version 1.1
Windows:
*Updated the UI so you now select which leak you are on (so the correct build.prop gets installed when you install the Acer UI Elements)
*The Root button is now much more verbose - useful for nerds and bugs reports :) It now says everything it's on, not just 'rooting...' or 'running...'
*The UI no longer gets 'crashy' when the main process is running (all thread sleeping is now done by an external application so the main thread doesn't hang)
Linux:
*You can select which leak you are on when installing the Acer UI Elements with either -u1, -u2 or -u3 (Info in usage)
Both:
*Added bash installation
5.0.1
*Updated UI to show it works with 0.022.00 (no functional changes)
*Released a Linux version for the first time!!
5.0
*Redesigned UI
*Added recovery reflash removal for those who want to install CWM or RA (so you don't need to use a zip to save your a*se after APX mode :P)
*Added Acer ICS UI Elements (UI Ring for loading apps)
*0.019.00 is now officially supported (although technically it has been supported since 4.0)
*Fixed the flexrom remount once /system has been remounted rw
*Fixed the Facelock resources install
*Fixed su permissions
4.0
*Fixed the remount /system option AGAIN
*Added a Remounter app which allows you to remount the system partition ON THE DEVICE without ICS Root! It also supports the RootFS but flexrom support is flakey. I should point out though that Root Explorer will happily remount the flexrom. The app is only like ~22kb but obviously requires you to be rooted ;)
3.1
*Added support for leak version 0.014.00! Support for the older version is still included but may not work correctly as much as been upgraded. The next version will remove support for 00.09.00 completely. This tool is most useful on the Leaked ICS for A500 and that is what I will be focusing on right now
*This new support includes an upgrade on mounting /system rw. It is not locked - it just requires a work around for now. Nice try Acer!!
*There is a new option to remove AcerNidus.apk if you want to (it looks to me like Acer's baby Carrier IQ and is designed to catch and submit crash logs. No thank you!!)
*Rooting the A500 on 00.014.00 should be pretty quick now - perhaps under a minute with some configurations!

Known bugs: you tell me! :)

3.0:
*Added option to untick rooting (i.e. to just install FaceLock / Trebuchet)
*Added new "Mounting Tools" menu
*mount /system rw on the fly in a way which will work with other apps (it's a true remount!!!)
*mount /system/vendor (aka /flexrom) rw on the fly
*mount / (rootfs) rw on the fly
*Updated the version of busybox installed to one without certain commands segfaulting - sorry about that!
*Made a few UI tweaks
*lite version is no longer in development! You must download all ~28MB now. It's too much of an issue maintaining two versions when they share the same code files

Known Bugs: some of the message boxes may be out of date. I'll sort that in the next major release. If I can pull it off, the next major release will be very exciting ;)

2.0.1:
Fixed the FaceLock resource file installation. Run over 2.0 to install the resource files
2.0:
*Added FaceLock option
*Added Trebuchet Option
1.0:
Initial Release

Finally, I'd like to thank:
*Vache for the leaked ICS
*@saurik for the mempodroid exploit
*All those who have used my tool! With your help and bug reports we have created the best (I hope!!) A500 ICS Leak rooting solution! I always welcome bug reports and if something goes wrong please please keep on doing what you're doing and let me know so I can see to it :)
*Loads of people I have forgotten for various features!
Developer Information
As a developer you can also host your own bundles for ICS Root :)
The bundle format is even simpler than for the flash tool - simply create a zip file representing the file system changes, zip it up and change the extension to .a500icsroot. For example, the AcerPrint bundle has the following structure:
Bundle Root
-system
--app
---AcerPrint.apk
--framework
---com.softwareimaging.acer.jar
--etc
---permissions
----com.softwareimaging.acer.xml
Notice how all folders are included. This is because the zip file is extracted to / during the rooting process

To create a repo create an XML file called bundles.xml on your server and adopt the following format:
Code: Select all
<icsrootrepo name="blackthund3r's ICS Root Bundle Repo">
<bundle id="1">

Trebuchet Launcher from CyanogenMod 9

</bundle>
<bundle id="2">

bash for Android

</bundle>
</icsrootrepo>

Simply swap the information out for your repo's information. A skeleton is below:
Code: Select all
<icsrootrepo name="Your repo's name">
<bundle id="1">

Bundle #1's short-ish description

</bundle>
<bundle id="2">

Bundle #2's short-ish description

</bundle>
<bundle id="3">

Bundle #3's short-ish description

</bundle>
</icsrootrepo>

Enjoy!

UnRoot
ICS UnRoot is an app I have written to REMOVE the ICS Root and all features installed by the application - effectively returning you to stock. This is useful if you get some sort of OTA notification which won't install etc
it is currently ***UNTESTED*** but should work - let me know how it goes!! :)
It will work up to ICS Root version 6 hacked devices and possible 7 too
Latest version: 1.0.0 (Initial Release)

Hello, thank you. Very easy, works very well (A500) .
The only problem is that the facelock does not work.

Yay! Glad it works :)
I noticed myself too that the FaceLock feature works in terms of setting it up (my tool is able to install the APK and the resource files) but for some reason the unlock doesn't appear on the lockscreen. Has a dev managed to configure this? I'd love to talk to someone who's been able to enable it. I did some research and the only files I can find related are:
*/system/app/FaceLock.apk (ICS Root installs this)
*/System/vendor/pittpatt (folder; ICS Root installs this)
*/System/lib/libfacelock_jni.so (bundled by default with the A500 ROM)

I'll try another version of libfacelock_jni.so and see if that helps but otherwise I'm confuzzled as to why this is. At least the resources are there to be enabled in the future

EDIT: The other version of libfacelock_jni.so caused FaceLock to crash (I get the option to report it etc) so the application is running. Perhaps Acer have changed the LockScreen somehow?

It is possible and I can make you a ClockworkMod zip for it but I should point out that, although the settings bit works (and you're able to configure your face and PIN / Pattern override), the unlock bit doesn't actually appear on the lockscreen.

Do you have write access to system folder with this or you have half-root like we have?

Been following and participating in a thread over at xda to root A100. This method worked on that device, choosing the A500 - however, /system is still not mountable/writeable. Great job though - thank you!

root doesnt work like its supposed to. i know its only half root due to the bootloader, but terminal emulator flat out says i'm not rooted after this despite sixasis working and titanium backup/root checker both saying i have root and busybox. i also posted this in your thread on XDA. i found this because someone on XDA posted a command to get some sort of write access to /system and was going to try it to rename launcher.apk to launcher.apk.bak since the trebuchet install worked, but terminal emulator wont give me root no matter how many times i try.

I replied on xda but I just thought: perhaps you accidentally revoked su access to terminal (ie by pressing deny instead of allow).

And yes it is the half-root access but I plan on bundling scripts to mount rw in another folder (mounting /system rw can't be done without further patches but you can certainly mount /system rw by mounting the block device as a loop file in another folder)
